Downstairs Hall Update

Since our last update the back half of the hall has been the major focus of restoration at the Newborn house. And, if you’ve been following along, you know that everything is more complicated and takes longer than you would first imagine.

It’s taken about a month to nearly finish the back half of the downstairs hall. The effort was slowed by other projects, work, travel, and (of course) the normal complications of working on a 110-year-old house. Major improvements included removing wallpaper, repairing plaster, electrical rehab and additions, cleaning and painting. Photo gallery.

You can see in the photos where we had to build a substantial scaffold/platform in the stairwell to the second floor. Without the scaffold, we would have needed a hovercraft to reach the second-floor ceiling and portions wallls in the upstairs hall.

We still have work to do in the hall before we call it complete. The stairs, handrails, spindles and some other wooodwork needs to be stripped and refinished. We found some very cool sconces on E-Bay that need to be installed. And, I’m sure there are other odds and ends before this portion of the project is done.

Stay tuned.

  1. looking good ! Snuffy looks like a happy cat now.

  2. That really looks great! What color is that on the walls in the stairwell and upstairs hall. We’ve had an idea for a gold color in our upstairs hall but weren’t sure. Seeing how wonderful it looks in your hall makes me want to get it. Also, where did you get your stencils from?

  3. Thanks for the great comment! The color on the wall is Clair de Lune from Behr. (Here’s a link.) I researched Victorian colors and this was one of them. Halls were mainly either grey or taupe. But I just really liked this color.
I have ended up getting all my stencils from different sources. The one for the parlor I got off ebay; Damask by Stensource International. The one for the bedroom I ordered online from Epoch Designs. The one for the front hall I ordered online as well from Andreae Designs Stencils.
For the back hall I used a design from the front hall stencil. I wanted to tie the two halls together and felt like this would be a good way.
