Dining Room Table Almost Done

I’ve almost finished the new dining room table. Click the thumbnails above to see larger versions of the pictures.

This table is another project from our old barn wood. In addition to the work table in the background, I’ve built several other projects from the old wood (including the guitar prototype). This table is about 40 inches wide and about 7 feet long. Once we add a couple of coats of polyurethane, it’ll be ready to move into the dining room.

Barn Wood Becomes Tables

worktable1

Here’s a picture of my latest project — a work table I built from heart pine that was left over from the old barn that became our new barn. Andi’s planning to start stained glass classes next month, and this will be her work table.

This is the second table I’ve made from the wood. The first one was a coffee table.

Next up: a new dining room table.

Barn Painting

Head over the OldHouseNetwork.com to see more pictures.

Just in time for Election Day, we’ve completed a special paint job on the barn. The barn is most red with white trim, but one complete side includes an American flag mural. On the other side, we added a old-school cola sign that takes up about half of one side. In the picture above you can see where we’ve started the painting for the front doors. When we get that done, I’ll put up a new photo.

If you remember, this is the barn we built from reclaimed lumber late last year.

I’m not sure what we have planned for the next big project, so stay tuned for updates.

More Restoration News at OldHouseNetwork.com

As we worked on the Newborn House, we were greatly encouraged by people who followed our progress though our blog. And, we enjoyed reading about the progress of other old house bloggers.

We still have projects planned here, so we’ll continue to update this site … maybe just not as often as before.

To help everyone get their fill of restoration news, we’ve created the OldHouseNetwork.com, a new site that allows everyone to participate and that shows the latest posts from a network of people who save old houses.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

Newborn House Restoration Complete!

Click image to view gallery of completed master bath.

This post is late, but the news is worth the wait: We have completed the restoration of Newborn House!

That’s right. After three years, upon completion of the master bathroom, we declared victory.

We thought the project would take about a year, but it actually took after nearly three years. We restored every room, one by one. Replaced all the plumbing, most of the electrical and lots of other infrastructure. We lost count, but we used at least 100 gallons of paint and twice that many tubes of caulk.

Don’t get me wrong, there are still some things to do, but really no more than any other homeowner has on their list. And, there’s a list of projects for the yard and landscaping. Right now, we’re painting the barn; we plan to move and shore up the smoke house; and we want to restore the brick flower pit.

Since declaring victory, we did mange to fit in a 25th anniversary vacation. Andi’s been working on some sewing and re-upholstery projects. I’ve been trying to ride my bicycle more often (including a six-hour mountain bike race tomorrow!).

We have plans to collect some of our favorite pictures and put them in a Shutterfly book. As soon as I get the pictures organized, I’ll post some of the before and affter images.

It’s been a grand adventure, and throughout the project, we’ve been encouraged by the number of people who have followed our progress through this blog. We always appreciated your e-mails, comments and phone calls.

Stay tuned for more updates and information about our upcoming projects.

Master Bath Progress Report

Click image to view photo library

Progress on the master bathroom has continued over the past few weeks. Since the last post, we’ve:

  • installed a tin ceiling,
  • found, restored and installed a very interesting light fixture (plus some other lighting),
  • painted the top half of the walls and stenciled them,
  • tiled the shower, and
  • started tiling the floor.

There’s still a good bit of work to do, but the end of the project is in site.

Stay tuned.

We've Moved (Our Site)

You might have noticed that something about our site has changed. We’ve moved to a new blogging software and rebuilt the site in a new location.

The old address (www.hoganblogs.com) still works, but if you use a news reader, you’ll need to update your RSS feed to this URL: http://tahogan.wordpress.com/feed/.

Six Weeks, and Counting

mbrcollage.jpg

It’s been a few weeks since we started the master bathroom renovation. As you can see from the pictures, it’s been quite a job … a total re-do from the floors to the ceiling.

Since our last post, we’ve:

  • completed the floor system, including floor joists and subfloor;
  • roughed in the plumbing;
  • reworked the electrical;
  • built a couple of small walls and installed the shower pan;
  • added rock board around the lower half of the room;
  • repaired , replaced and refinished the plaster;
  • painted the trim and upper half of the walls, and
  • started putting up the tin ceiling.

You can see more pictures on our Picasa site. With any luck, we’ll finish the ceiling this weekend, and Andi will start stenciling the paint job next week. After that, tile the shower, tile the floor, tile the lower half of the walls, install the fixtures … and … take a vacation.

Stay tuned.

Master Bath Starts This Weekend

MBR-017.jpg
Andi finishes removing remaining chunks of plaster from laths

We had a very busy weekend and made a lot of progress on the renovation of the master bathroom. This is the last room we have to restore, and it will take a lot of work to get it completed. This weekend, we started in earnest. The pre-work of removing the old fixtures and cutting off the plumbing was done a couple of weekends ago.

The first step this weekend was to remove the plaster around the lower part of the walls. This lower part of the walls will be tiled with subway tiles, and the upper two-thirds will be painted plaster. It was tiring, but the biggest problem was the dust storm we created when we made the level cut around the room.

The second set of tasks involved a lot of work to level the floor. We’re replacing the hardwood floor (which had a several rotten spots) with tile. And, one corner of the room was about four inches lower than the opposite corner. So, the only real option was to remove all of the floor boards and re-hang all the floor joists. Once we cut out and nail down one more sheet of plywood, we will have finished half of the room.

View photo gallery, and stay tuned.

25 Years, and Counting

flowers.jpg
This isn’t about house restoration … It’s even better news … We just celebrated our 25th anniversary! Candice sent flowers from college. Lots of other folks sent cards, e-mails, phone calls and loads of love this way. Thanks. We’ll be sure to invite you all to our 50th anniversary party when that rolls around in a few years.
